What is Fixed Wireless Broadband (FWB)? Is it the same as WiFi?
BroadAir FWB is a point-to-point radio system established between a BroadAir base station and the client location. Each link has defined security in which the client's IP address and the unique hardware ID (MAC address) are used to establish a secure communications channel. The BroadAir FWB platform supports connections up to five miles from our base station.
In contrast, WiFi systems let users only in close proximity to a “hotspot“ link to the Internet. The client connects wirelessly to a device that must be within several hundred feet, depending on the surroundings. These links are not secure unless a user takes measures to establish his own security.
How does the BroadAir system compare to DSL or cable modems?
Broad Air offers synchronous (same speed uploading and downloading) Internet connectivity that often beats DSL and cable modems for bandwidth and reliability.
Many homes in our region can’t get DSL because of distance limitations from a telephone company’s central office, or because the existing telephone wires or equipment are old and won’t support high-speed Internet. Many cable providers haven’t upgraded their networks and can only offer “one-way” service, requiring a separate, costly telephone line for uploading.
BroadAir is not confined by wires or antiquated equipment. And BroadAir doesn’t demand the purchase of a bundle of “tied in” services and unnecessary connections.
Is BroadAir the same as satellite TV systems?
No, satellite systems have limited bandwidth capacity, and charge by usage (amount of data transferred). They are often very expensive to operate for broadband communications; their upload capabilities are limited and slow, and, like one way cable, often require a separate telephone line.
Do I need any special equipment to use BroadAir?
BroadAir keeps it simple. You don’t need any special processor, RAM capacity, or Disk space. All you need is a computer with a 10/100 BASE-T Network Interface and an Internet browser. That is it!!!!! We do not load any software on the subscriber’s computer.
How many computers can a BroadAir connection support at a location?
We can support multiple computers via simple home networking.
Subscribers can install a router-based, wired network, with outlets available for multiple user; or a wireless hub, such as a Linksys® terminal, can be attached, creating a localized WiFi “hotspot.” Each computer would have to be equipped to handle wireless communication links. Most new laptop computers have this capability built in. Subscribers should take care to implement the appropriate security precautions available within the wireless hub.
How secure is BroadAir?
The network uses several layers of security to insure that other users cannot eavesdrop on your connection. First, our network only communicates with other BroadAir devices. Next, we use frequency bands that are separate from those used by WiFi devices. In addition to that, the network utilizes spread spectrum signaling techniques that prevent other devices from tracking the signal. And finally all BroadAir wireless links are encrypted with advanced 128-bit AES encryption to for additional security against unwanted listeners. We also support additional subscriber security features including Virtual Private Networks (VPN).
What happens to the system in heavy rain or snow storms? Will the BroadAir system still work?
Yes. BroadAir works in all weather. Our system operates at a frequency range that is not susceptible to weather related transmission problems.
Is BroadAir service available in my area?
Please check the Availability section of our website for news updates on our service availability. We plan initial availability in July 2005 for targeted areas of Hunterdon County, NJ. We will expand coverage in Hunterdon County throughout the summer and fall of 2005, and into adjoining counties beginning in early 2006.
How long does it take to get service after I order & do I need to be at home for the install?
Yes, you will need to be home to allow our installer to bring the data cable(s) into your home, and to allow the final setup and test of the system. The installation normally will take 1 - 2 hours. BroadAir defines a two-hour time window when our technicians will arrive at your location. We will call shortly before our arrival to reconfirm the appointment.
Does BroadAir offer E-mail services?
Yes, we offer POP, IMAP, and webmail services. Our customers choose which option(s) are the best for them. Once you have BroadAir service, you can set up or modify your e-mail accounts through a convenient on-line interface. If you need help, you can call our tech support desk for assistance.
